Can we develop a more sustainable plastic?

Aquapak has developed a polymer for use in thin-film packaging. It is not only strong and durable, but also recyclable and has excellent environmental credentials. It is biodegradable, water soluble and harmless to humans and fish.

Irreparable damage

Plastic is everywhere and has important uses, from prolonging the shelf-life of food to lightweight transportation. The problem with plastic packaging is that it is often only intended for “single-use”, meaning it cannot be reused. Plastic waste litters our cities, waterways and oceans, contributing to environmental degradation and health problems in humans and animals. Only as little as 14% of plastic is recycled, resulting in irreparable damage caused by millions of tonnes of plastic that ends up in nature.

Circular solution

A circular approach means Aquapak has considered plastic at all stages of its life, including its end of intended use and subsequent reuse. Although Aquapak’s plastic has similar properties to traditional plastic, it’s end-of-life behaviour is vastly different. It can be recycled, recovered or dissolved.

Early adopter

Whilst transitioning to sustainable plastic is no easy task, the plastic packaging sector is poised to be an early mover. As plastic waste becomes an increasingly topical challenge, brands want to be seen as sustainability leaders and avoid consumer backlash. This is creating a strong enough economic drive to pressure early adopters to begin the transition to a sustainable plastic future, helped greatly by Aquapak.

This story shows how Aquapak supports Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, specifically Target 12.5: “By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.”
