Can new apartments promote sustainable communities?

Berkley Group, in joint partnership with the National Grid, is developing a new community consisting of apartment blocks, business retail spaces and community areas in a way in which promotes connectivity between residence and the sites heritage.

Demand > Supply

A research team at the University of Leicester revealed that between 2006 and 2012, 54,000 acres of green space was converted to “artificial surfaces” – mostly housing in the UK. This is further emphasised when focusing particularly on the capital where it is reported that even if the number of people per dwelling in London was to fall to the British average, an extra 360,000 homes would be needed.

A research team at the University of Leicester revealed that between 2006 and 2012, 54,000 acres of green space was converted to “artificial surfaces” – mostly housing in the UK. However, there are still shortages, particularly in the capital where it is reported that even if the number of people per dwelling in London was to fall to the British average, an extra 360,000 homes would be needed.

Creating a Community

Together, Berkley Group and National Grid are making a £33.9 million contribution to services and infrastructure to ensure that Clarendon Road is connected, not only to the surrounding neighbourhoods and inner city, but also to its heritage.

This story shows how Berkeley Group supports Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, specifically Target 11.3: “By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanisation and capacity for participatory integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries.”
