Can jeans help protect our oceans from waste?

An estimated 9 million tonnes of plastic flows into the world’s oceans every year. In partnership with Waterkeeper Alliance, Bionic is helping protect coastal and marine environments from plastic pollution by transforming collected plastics into durable textiles and polymers.

A plastic problem

It is thought that by 2048 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Our oceans are filling up with plastic and marine ecosystems are becoming damaged at an alarming rate. Sea creatures die from eating plastic and plastic can even end up in the seafood on our plates.

Collecting plastic pollution

Bionic purchases plastic waste collected by Waterkeeper Alliance global network, Stronger Thread. The network operates recycling facilities where plastic is collected, sorted and baled. Strong relationships with local NGOs and coastal communities use intimate knowledge of waterways to provide recovery infrastructure, investing in local education and capacity building.

A new lease of life

Baled plastics are used to create yarn which set a new standard for recycled material in both performance and fashion. Numerous brands create materials from ultra-soft plush knits to waterproof canvases from the waste. Durable footwear and non-clothing applications such as luxury furniture and decoration can also be created from the material. Further applications include in the automotive industry, where roof linings and seat coverings can be made, as well as in many industrial applications, too. This innovative use of plastic waste is helping significantly reduce marine pollution and debris.

This story shows how Bionic supports Goal 14: Life Below Water, specifically Target 14.1: “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.”
