The tech industry suffers from severe lack of gender diversity, with females significantly underrepresented. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects are stereotypically considered “male subjects”, resulting in fewer women training in these fields and consequently taking up STEM careers. Recognising the need for greater diversity and female role models in tech, Booking.com is pursuing a number of ways to further equal access to tech careers.
Booking.com is furthering the body of knowledge that attempts to make sense of gender diversity issues. Combined with third-party studies, its research identifies the barriers faced by women in tech, the opportunities are available to women and how positive change can be made.
In partnership with two of Europe’s foremost universities to support female undergraduates, Booking.com has made 15 postgraduate scholarships available in 2018. The scholarships are available to female students enrolled at University of Oxford and TU Delft partner institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
Honouring female role models who work in tech to transform companies and communities, Booking.com recognises female pioneers, which it hopes will inspire others, whilst celebrating success. Affirming its commitment, it also supports the entire industry by being a signatory to the Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition initiative. The initiative aims to ensure all European citizens develop digital skills, working across educators, businesses and non-profit organisations.
This story shows how Booking.com supports Goal 5: Gender Equality, specifically Target 5.5: “Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.”
Established in 1996 in Amsterdam, Booking.com has grown from a small Dutch start-up to one of the largest travel e-commerce companies in the world. Its mission is to empower people to experience the world. Using digital technology, Booking.com helps take the friction out of travel.
