How can DIY reduce homelessness?

B&Q, a DIY and home improvement company, have partnered with Shelter, a charity that helps those that are struggling with bad housing or homelessness, to make home improvement accessible to all.

A Crisis on the Rise

British Government street counts revealed that, in 2017 alone, over 50,000 households were accepted as homeless in England alone, and over 4000 people were sleeping rough – that’s a 50% increase from 2010. The effect this can have on those suffering is incomprehensible; homeless people are 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence and over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population.

A Practical Guide

B&Q, in partnership with Shelter, are working to combat these figures in the hope that they can help reduce those living in poverty. They are funding a team of six specialist Shelter DIY advisers to work with people at risk of losing their home, as well as those settling into a new home following a period of homelessness.

Improved Quality of Life

Through their partnership B&Q and shelter are improving the lives of those living in the homeless community. They are teaching people basic DIY skills – by providing this service they are combining education and support that in turn can help people find, create and enjoy safe, happy homes.

This story exemplifies how B&Q supports Goal 1: No Poverty, specifically target 1.3: “By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance.”
