CityVerve, Manchester’s smart city demonstrator proves that innovation comes from collaboration. The project, which aims to make urban living better by pioneering the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, is led by a consortium of 21 organisations, including tech companies such as Cisco and BT, the University of Manchester, and more.
A project built on partnership
Creating a smart city is no easy feat, requiring input from many different parties, each bringing different expertise, experience and skills to the project. A team that combines the brightest minds in the world has been established to create a blueprint that will be transferred to cities worldwide.
The platform developed by CityVerve is truly open, meaning that new partners can contribute to the project at any time, from large corporates to start-ups and individual entrepreneurs. Such a platform means that everybody is welcome to collaborate, making way for greater potential for innovation created by those who live, work and play in Manchester.
Spanning the disciplines
The project spans a range of disciplines, from transport to healthcare, calling upon diverse minds and skill sets which drives the need for unique partnerships. Innovators, developers and citizens from all walks of life are needed to contribute their input.
Transfer and dissemination
The purpose of a demonstrator project is to show what is possible, in order to create a blueprint for smart cities worldwide. There is a great deal of learning and knowledge transfer associated with the project, to allow CityVerve to be replicated globally. It could eventually be extended to developing countries who may be able to take advantage of environmentally sound technologies pioneered by smart city Manchester.
This story shows how CityVerve supports Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, specifically Target 17.7: “Promote the development, transfer, dissemination and diffusion of environmentally sound technologies to developing countries on favourable terms, including on concessional and preferential terms, as mutually agreed.”
CityVerve is Manchester’s smart city demonstrator. CityVerve brings together the brightest minds and pioneering uses of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to redefine ‘smart’ in the context of a living, working city.
