How can a retailer help kids eat veg?

Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives, and is owned by its millions of members. It is the UK’s fifth biggest food retailer with more than 2,500 local, convenience, and medium-sized stores. Co-op is working to tackle childhood obesity through its partnership with Veg Power and ITV, which encourages kids to eat more healthily.

A simple solution

One-third of primary school children are overweight or obese and it’s now the UK’s biggest health challenge. It is one of the leading causes of premature death in the UK, and increases the risk of 13 types of cancer, as well as heart disease and diabetes. There are all sorts of different things that can be done to tackle this, but there’s a really simple one that will have a massive impact, and that’s convincing kids to eat more veg. But there’s a problem… many British kids don’t really like veg. In fact, 80% don’t eat enough.

Vegetables can be a battleground for families. Getting kids to eat fruit sometimes feels like a win, whilst getting kids to eat vegetables can seem impossible. Together with Veg Power, ITV, and other supermarkets, the Co-op aims to offer healthy choices to its customers to showcase the wonders of vegetables, and how easily they can be incorporated into your regular meals.

Get involved

Co-op is backing Veg Power with promotions across its stores and website as well as involving 2,000 children who attend 10 primary schools within the Co-op Academies Trust. It is also encouraging its customers to get involved by downloading a Veg Power reward chart or visiting its recipe site to find a selection of tasty meals filled with veggies.
