Climate stability is essential for resilient food and water cycles, natural processes that Danone relies on in its business to fulfil its mission to bring health through food to as many people as possible. In order to achieve climate stability, a profound change must take place to slow the trend of increasing temperatures linked to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Danone has established a trajectory to reduce GHG emissions by targeting zero net emissions in the long term.
Danone’s approach to helping decarbonise the economy spans its entire business. GHG emissions occur in the sourcing, production and consumption of its products, so it seeks to address the entire carbon cycle to decrease its impact. Integrating principles such as continuous improvement, innovation and partnerships, it seeks to bring all stakeholders on its journey toward solving complex climate challenges. Sustainable agriculture is central to its approach, improving biodiversity, soil, water use, animal welfare and farmer livelihood, as well as GHG emissions.
Danone’s strategy towards achieving its target of zero net emissions is built around five goals, which involve Danone working with its stakeholders to raise awareness, improve education and build capacity for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
- Cut emissions full scope: Danone works with everybody involved in its business, including farmers and suppliers to reduce GHG emissions.
- Foster carbon positive solutions: pioneering programmes invest in projects that contribute to mitigating climate change.
- Eliminate deforestation from the supply chain by 2020: forests represent one of the largest, most cost-effective climate solutions available today. Danone supports forest restoration to help achieve its climate target.
- Build resilience in our food and water cycles: new alliances empower Danone to help smallholders improve economic resilience through sustainable agriculture.
- Offer healthier and sustainable diet solutions: new recipes and innovative products that are produced in a more natural resource-efficient way.
Danone reports 7.4 million tons of CO2 in 2015 within its direct scope of responsibility. It has reduced CO2 intensity by 46% since 2007, and aims for a further 50% reduction by 2030 within its full scope of responsibility. Within its full scope, it works on building alliances and co-creating solutions with suppliers, farmers, consumers and communities to reach its target and help decarbonise the economy.
