Earth Color believes that responsible forestry is essential to its success as a sustainable and forest friendly printer. It considers protecting and promoting responsible forest management key factors to its business success, maintaining that decent forestry is vital for the health and longevity of the planet’s ecosystems.
Earth Color is constantly increasing the volume of its paper that comes from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sources. This means that the wood, paper and other forest products come from well-managed forests and/or recycled materials. It has emphasised the importance of purchasing post-consumer waste paper as well as recycling its own waste, saving the equivalent of 280,000 trees. Its on-going responsible forest management initiatives have preserved over 445 acres of forest.
Innovation for sustainability
Research-led innovation uncovers new eco-friendly alternatives that help Earth Color and its clients be more forest friendly. It has created an entirely recyclable material for packaging and retail promotions that is not only superior in printability but is also produced using up to 50% post-consumer PET, sourced from recycled water bottles. Its fifteen year partnership with Prairie Pulp & Paper resulted in the development of a paper made from 60% wheat-straw waste and 40% FSC certified wood fiber.
This story shows how Earth Color supports Goal 15: Life on Land, specifically Target 15.2: “By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.”
