Expedia’s off-setting programme is not only tackling the greenhouse gas emissions associated with corporate travel, but also helping reduce poverty through a conjoined revenue-sharing programme. This way, individuals personally receive a portion of revenue, boosting their income. It does this by partnering with the global nonprofit Carbon Offsets to Alleviate Poverty (COTAP).
Travel generates large carbon emissions, contributing to climate change. The emissions associated with Expedia’s own corporate travel are no exception. Working with COTAP, Expedia can alleviate two sustainability issues simultaneously: climate change and poverty.
Whilst carbon offsetting projects counteract emissions through tree planting, the programme not only stipulates that rural communities own the projects, but also receive at least 60 percent of the revenue generated by the projects. This provides valuable income in communities who typically earn less than $2 per day.
To date, the projects have channelled over $10 million to rural communities, funding long-term sustainable livelihoods. Over 60 villages benefit from projects such as forest restoration that improve the village drinking water system. The funds also support forest fire control and replanting that further secures drinking water supplies.
This story shows how Expedia supports Goal 1: No Poverty, specifically Target 1.1: “By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day.”
