Passion for sustainable seas
Founders of Fishpeople, Duncan Berry and Kipp Baratoff, bonded over their concern for the state of coastal fisheries where overfishing had cost the seabed and local economy dearly. Together, in 2012, they founded Fishpeople to “reimagine North America’s relationship with the sea”, operating a business that respects the seas by helping restore habitats, supporting local incomes and allowing consumers to enjoy delicious, healthy seafood knowing that it has been fished responsibly.
In its relentless quest to fish responsibly, Fishpeople work with small-scale fishermen to catch only abundant species, preventing overfishing which can cause serious problems. Using sustainable methods such as a pole with a line and a single hook, almost no bycatch (unwanted fish and other creatures trapped during fishing for a different species) is caught. By processing and selling fish close to source, unnecessary air miles are reduced. Because of this, the economic value of the fish is kept locally, supporting American jobs.

This story shows how Fishpeople Seafood supports Goal 14: Life Below Water, specifically Target 14.4: “By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristics.”
