How can cereal help disadvantaged children?

Founded almost eighty years ago, Greggs is the UK’s leading bakery food-on-the-go retailer with over 1,850 shops nationwide and serving over six million customers a week. The Greggs Breakfast Club Programme was established in 1999 and has since provided nutritious breakfasts to over 50 million schoolchildren in disadvantaged areas.

The Breakfast Club

The Greggs Breakfast Club Programme has provided nutritious breakfasts to over 50 million schoolchildren in disadvantaged areas. The programme currently brings breakfast to 31,500 children across the UK every school day and is proven to make a huge difference to pupils’ attendance levels, behaviour and learning. On November 6th 2018, The Greggs Foundation celebrated the launch of its 500th Breakfast Club in Newcastle upon Tyne – the home of Greggs.

Building relationships

Greggs encourages the use of parent volunteers in the breakfast clubs, as research has shown the clubs creation of volunteer opportunities has enabled inactive adults to become work ready. The Breakfast Clubs also help to build relationships, both between pupils who enjoy socialising over a meal and between the school, and the parents who are benefiting from the extra support.

Starting the day right

Everybody knows the benefits of a healthy breakfast, but not every child gets one before the start of the school day. Unfortunately, Greggs regularly hear stories of children who only get one decent meal a day, their school dinner, and of children who are too hungry to participate productively in lessons. Greggs is proud to be actively making a difference, at many of the breakfast club schools they often see first-hand children helping themselves to second, third, and even fourth helpings of cereal.

This story shows how Greggs supports Goal 2: Zero Hunger, specifically Target 2.1: “By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular, the poor and people in vulnerable situations including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.”
