Land Securities, a commercial property developer and investor, is aiming to create spaces that can benefit everyone by tackling gender inequalities in the construction industry. They believe they can only create diverse properties is with a diverse workforce.
The Time Has Come
In the UK, according to statistics, 99% of on-site construction workers are male. But, the time has come for this to change. The UK needs to significantly increase the number of people with engineering and construction skills; in 2014, one report put the annual shortfall of STEM skills at 40,000. The challenge is therefore to combat the stigma attached to females working in the construction industry by inspiring, empowering and educating the next generation of women.
The Power of Diversity
Land Securities are promoting the power of diversity. Therefore, in collaboration with Ahead Partnership, Land Securities launched their “Girls Can Do It Too” programme which targets school girls aged 12 and 13. The pupils can liaise with successful women in the industry and are even given the opportunity to design, budget and plan their own development project over an eight-week period.
Looking to the Future
The programme allows for young women to learn about the various career options available within the construction industry in a way that is fun and interactive. By educating the young women of today they are diversifying the industry for the future.
This story shows how Land Securities supports Goal 5: Gender Equality, specifically Target 5.5: “Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.”
