Can sugar cane waste reduce deforestation?

As the only tree-free, carbon neutral paper supplier in the United Kingdom, Paper Plus is on a mission to help the planet one sheet at a time. Their paper products, such as envoPAP, are made using sustainable, sugarcane-based natural resources. Paper Plus has big ambitions to reduce deforestation and become a world leader in environmentally friendly paper products.

Saving trees

Deforestation accounts for 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, a figure that even exceeds the pollution created by the global transportation sector. EnvoPAP is an efficient solution for reducing deforestation; whereas one pallet or 40 boxes of 30% recycled paper saves only seven trees, one pallet of envoPAP saves 24 trees. On the Paper Plus website, they have created a calculator that allows customers to see in a straightforward way how much difference they can make with every purchase of envoPAP.

A sugary alternative

EnvoPAP papers are an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative made from Sugarcane fibres. Sourced from Bagasse (sugar cane fibre) and Wheat Straw, the production of envoPAP uses 80% less wood fibre than paper produced from wood pulp. In addition, environmental research shows that envoPAP has 29% less environmental impact than recycled paper. However, Paper Plus also acknowledges the vast importance of recycling paper, in fact, envoPAP paper can be recycled to make recycled paper after use.

Sweet for farmers too…

Using sugar cane waste to make paper doesn’t just help the environment. The paper industry in India also supports corporate farming which helps farmers to plant and process sugarcane. Therefore, these sugarcane farmers are able to obtain technical expertise and a ready market for their produce.

Big ambitions

Paper Plus aim to innovate using technology for sustainable development and provide a world-class eco-friendly paper. Inspired by a challenge, they strive to become one of the UK’s largest and most efficient solution providers of environmentally friendly paper.

This story shows how Paper Plus supports Goal 15: Life on Land, specifically Target 15.2: “By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.”
