Sky Ocean Rescue is an innovative programme spotlighting issues affecting the health of our oceans. It aims to find innovative solutions to the challenge of plastics in the ocean and seeks to inspire people to make small changes that collectively contribute to make a difference.
Rescuing the ocean
Following its hugely successful Sky Rainforest Rescue, Sky have turned to another important habitat that is under threat. From making sustainability commitments in its own business, to fund and awareness raising through its media platforms, Sky are able to use its big impact to make a real difference.
Like many businesses, Sky has a substantial plastic footprint. It has made the bold commitment to remove all single-use plastic from its operations, products and supply chain by 2020. This involves reducing plastic consumption across the business, from the drinking bottles used by its employees to product packaging.
Innovative and entrepreneurial new ideas can help solve the plastic problem. Sky has committed a fund worth £25 million over five years to help develop ideas that reduce the volume of plastic ending up in the ocean.
Sky’s television channels have committed to highlighting the issues that affect ocean health to raise awareness and show people how simple changes to their daily lives can go a long way to help solve the plastic problem. It recommends people become a #OceanHero by using reusable bottles and bags for life, for example. It promotes joining beach cleans, petitions and fundraising and suggests people choose sustainable seafood as great ways to protect the ocean.
This story shows how Sky UK supports Goal 14: Life Below Water, specifically Target 14.1: “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.”
