Unless we fish sustainably, our oceans are under threat caused by exhaustion of fish stocks and severe degradation of the marine environment. Thai Union, a Thailand-based producer of seafood-based food products, believes that traceability is essential to improving the transparency and practices of the entire seafood industry.
Protecting food and livelihood
Oceans provide a crucial source of food and livelihood, contributing to food and economic security in the context of a growing global population. However, with fishing come environmental costs which threaten marine ecosystems. Many species have suffered substantial population declines caused by overfishing, resulting in compromised ecosystem functioning and equally devastating socioeconomic consequences when fisheries have to shut down. Sustainable practices must be promoted so that oceans are protected and continue to offer valuable resource for future generations.
By tracing every product, from catch to consumption, Thai Union is able to ensure every part of the value chain follows responsible and sustainable practices. Being able to trace a product back to source makes it possible to monitor the actions and operations of suppliers with respect to sustainability challenges, from ghost fishing gear to marine litter.
Digital data allows Thai Union to securely share information with other stakeholders, such as regulators, retailers and customers. It has extended its traceability programme beyond the ocean, to significant ingredient components and packaging suppliers. The data may be used for audit purposes or academic research to help develop effective science-based management plans to improve ocean health and marine biodiversity.
This story shows how Thai Union supports Goal 14: Life Below Water, specifically Target 14.A: “Increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacity and transfer marine technology, taking into account the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Criteria and Guidelines on the Transfer of Marine Technology, in order to improve ocean health and to enhance the contribution of marine biodiversity to the development of developing countries, in particular small island developing States and least developed countries.”
