How can a company tackle disability discrimination?

Virgin Media, a British telecommunications and media company, have collaborated with Scope, a disability charity, on a £1 million partnership, with the aim of using digital technology to break down barriers for disabled people in the hope that attitudes towards disabilities can be changed once and for all.

Disability Deficit

As of 2018, people with disabilities are twice as likely to be unemployed than those without a disability. This number reflects the one million disabled people who are willing and able to work.

The Dream Team

In 2015, Virgin Media announced its partnership with Scope, a disability charity; they are working together to use digital technology to provide disabled people with more freedom and independence meaning they can become more connected with people facing similar challenged to themselves.

Transforming Lives

As well as providing those with disabilities with a supportive network that seeks to improve their confidence, Virgin Media has also pledged to one million disabled people to get into and stay in work by the end of 2020. Research has shown that disabled people are forced to apply for 60% more jobs than non-disabled people. Virgin Media are tackling these barriers by: funding Scope’s employment service, improving their own approach to disabled employees and customers by making reasonable adjustments by improving training and accessibility to their buildings; they are also working with other businesses and Government to drive improvements in policy.

This story shows how Virgin Media supports Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, specifically Target 8.5: “By 2030, achieve full and productive employment for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value.”
